Suikomareso in detail
Feeling warm cooking dinner on winter nights
Spending my time in the heat of my family like at home
The feelings inside Suikomareso
In Suikomareso you can enjoy a bar and a room together, like a revival of medieval Europe.
Our wish is that you have a pleasant stay while enjoying the daily activities of the city
In the old days, during the Middle Ages in Europe, it was very common to stop at an inn to spend the night. These inns were particular, they generally served as a bar and a hotel, it was possible to order food and drink, then go to sleep in beds usually upstairs.
Suikomareso is therefore a good mix between the old European Middle Ages and the district of Mameda which represents ancient Japan.
Like your own vacation home
However, the focus was on practicality but above all on comfort, which is why we do not offer a single room as in any hotel, but indeed a complete house, with its own kitchen, 2 bedrooms and bathroom with washing machine. Spend a pleasant evening at the adjoining bar, Bajio, tasting local produce, then rest in the room next door, your very own vacation home.
Stay while learning about the daily activities of this city
To stay as if to live
We hope you will spend your time in this place slowly while feeling the daily life and activities of the people of Hita.
So, from this place, you can interact and connect with local people, visit various places in Hita and Kyushu, and later when you think back on your trip, you will have warm memories. We sincerely hope that you would consider this place your own vacation home.
Duality of style
Old and new. Japanese and Western. The downstairs is focused on European modernism, and the floor on traditional Japanese comfort. We create a space that takes advantage of each of the advantages of each.
In addition, for example, Japanese modernism is integrated into the bathroom and European comfort is integrated into the upstairs bedroom. On the ground floor, there is a living space with a functional kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet, and a shower room.
Local materials and craftsmanship
Suikomareso was made by Hita craftsmen using Hita cedar and earth. You can experience the craftsmanship and atmosphere using local materials.
Adjacent to the ground floor, the bar serves dishes and drinks made from local ingredients. Spend your time in Hita by strolling through the historic town of Mameda or visiting the recommended shops and places.
The feelings inside the logo
Imagine the river of Hita, the city of water
This logo represents the old letter “water” and the flow of the river that does not stop. It also follows the layout of existing rocks such as Era Rock and Suikomareso Rock. The slightly pointed rock in the center of the underside is the “Suikomareso rock” (which seems to be sucked in by the river). Surrounded by the cedar frame of Hita, the rocks in the green-blue river. What a strange name that “Suikomareso” or “that seems to be sucked in”.
The symbols (kanjis) for Suikomareso can mean “a rare villa in the water”. Is it a place that seems naturally sucked in? But the name actually comes from a different episode. Hita is the city of water. The river is at the center and the people of Hita have grown up playing in the river since their childhood.
There is a place called “Era” where we used to play, among many other places in the river. It is a hard-to-reach place, with an area for swimming surrounded by large rocks that are fun to jump from. To get to this large rock, you had to jump from the rock in front, swim across the current, hang on to the rock and finally climb it.
When we were playing there and wanted to come back to land, we had to jump off the big boulder, cross the current again, hang on to the boulder that seemed to suck us in without getting sucked in and then climb back up.
There is a stream of water that is sucked under the boulder, so you need to firmly grip the boulder and climb it so that you don’t get sucked in. We call this rock “the rock that seems to aspire us”, and this rock is the origin of the name.
By the way, the Bajio Cafe & Bar on the 1st floor is also the office of the company, whose name is “Eranoiwa” (The Era Rock). As it is located in the same place as Eranoiwa and is a pair, the name of the house has been changed to “Suikomareso”.
Until the creation of Suikomareso
I wished for the building to look like it had been there for a long time.
Hita has long played a role as a hub city. The building is located on the banks of the Kagetsu River, at the foot of Miyuki Bridge, at the entrance to the Yasaka Shrine, and in a corner of Mamedamachi, Because it’s a place a key place in the town that many people see when entering and returning to Hita, I wanted to make it not a brand-new building, but a building made by a first-class craftsman with genuine local materials that has the appearance that has existed for a long time.
I hope that by having a solid presence here, it can become one of the symbols that can raise the level of Mamedamachi and Hita. Since Hita is a timber town, there are many good buildings in Hita that are made of high-quality wood. I had the image that if we could make good use of it, we would be able to produce high-quality products that cannot be achieved in other regions.
Like an antique tearoom and a modern inn in a historic city
The exterior is an interesting building with a Japanese shape and a Western finish as the original structure of the building. It looks like a Japanese building like a warehouse, but it was made by laminating outer walls called siding, and it is a construction method that is still practiced today by spraying aggregate called lysine. Compared to plaster finish, this has the advantage of being easier to install, resistant to rain and wind, and cheaper to install. In this case as well, the exterior wall painting is maintained every 10 years, and the wall is protected while being modified.
However, as it looks, the vertical joint lines look larger, which makes it look like a vertical stripe. Also, unlike plaster, the surface has rough stones on the surface, so it does not look like a Japanese-style wall like a warehouse.
Because it is a building that influences the image of the city
In addition, orange tiles were pasted around the entrance, and it was an existing building that looked like a simple back entrance. We devised the exterior design and construction so that it would be a teahouse and an inn standing at the entrance of the shrine. First, I filled the joints and aggregates of the white wall and repainted it with a flat wall like plaster. It seems to be a trivial matter, but by doing this, the atmosphere changes to a Japanese warehouse at once.
In addition, a lattice made of red Hita cedar wood is used around the entrance to create the face of the entrance of the inn. Also, by making it difficult to see the inside from the outside, we were able to create a private space at the entrance of the inn, which gave more space to spend time. Finally, I attached the sign and letters of Suikomareso to the white wall of the building. When entering and leaving Mamedamachi, the scenery from the opposite bank changed from the top of Miyuki Bridge. It seems that a clear path to the approach to Yasaka Shrine has been created. At night, the shadow of the sign of Suikomareso is reflected by the streetlight, and it fades right with the scenery of the town.
The people behind Suikomareso
Take the time to appreciate Hita slowly
The Mikuma river, the rich nature, and the city of Hita, where we played when we were children. Over the years, they have gradually changed. Hita’s time and air have lived on since ancient times. I wish I could continue to carry out my daily activities at the beloved Hita, whose time and atmosphere are imbued in my body. So, I would like to be able to share this rich land that is my native village of Hita to make it a base of activity. I came back to Hita with this in mind for the first time in 20 years. Then, we decided to renovate an old, uninhabited folk house using materials and craftsmanship from Hita to create a house where everyone could enjoy their stay. We hope that this house, named Suikomareso, will make your trip richer and more alive.
I will be present in the Bajio bar during opening hours (8:00 p.m. to midnight), so feel free to come and ask me for advice or ask me questions about the book, or whatever. With that, have a good time!
Do what’s in my power for my hometown
I returned to my hometown of Hita in 2009, and I run a cinema there. It started when I was asked to revive a movie theater that has been closed twice, but even if no one comes, movies and culture are very important. The owner of this inn, Mr. Setoguchi, has been a friend of mine since childhood. We shared the world of cinema and music together. The starting point, the place where he expressed his determination to grow as a person, is the river called Era, which is located upstream of the Mikuma River. There is a rock that one can jump from, which is called the rock Era, and there is a dangerous place waiting after jumping that we have nicknamed “the one that attracts” (Suikomareso). Then he became an actor, and I became a cinema owner. He came back to Hita and opened this hostel. Now, I am determined to do what I can not only for myself, but also for my hometown of Hita, for my family, friends and those who have visited Hita. So, I participate with the intention of helping as much as possible. I would be very happy if I could create a new story with you while keeping our promises we made to this river. Take your time to discover and appreciate the city of Hita. Finally, don’t hesitate to come and ask me questions if you don’t understand anything!
